Spartans’ Gilbert featured on ESPN.com

I walked into Spartan Daily’s newsroom today and noticed something odd on Executive Editor John Hornberg’s computer screen: An SJSU player was featured on ESPN.com’s Web site.

It’s not often that an SJSU athlete makes it to the front page of ESPN’s site, but Gilbert is worthy of the coverage.

Last year, the Spartans’ offense struggled from a lack of balance. SJSU could not run the ball, ranking 115th in rushing offense. It seemed like the Spartan offense stopped trying to run the ball toward the end of the season, making offense worse.
Since Marcus Arroyo started calling plays in 2007, the run game has disappeared. Now that Arroyo is gone, I was hoping the Spartans would go back to the balanced offense that was in place during the 2006 season that led us to a New Mexico Bowl victory.

“Personnel is a crapshoot,” said Spartans head coach Dick Tomey when asked how he thought his recruits ranked against the other teams in the Western Athletic Conference. “Let’s just wait and see.”
